If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with Eyebrow Microblading. Microblading is a technique that creates hair strokes in the eyebrows to immitate a natural look.
If you’ve heard of Microblading, then you have probably also heard of Shading or Microshading. It’s a technique that implants pigment into the skin to create a different, softer look for eyebrows.
We took the most popular questions artists asked us over the last few months and sat down with talented artist, Ivonne Sanchez to talk about her experience with Eyebrow Shading.

Question: What is Microshading and how is it different from Microblading?
Answer: Microshading is performed using either an electric hand tool or a manual tool, which creates a soft powdered effect that resembles eyebrow powder. A microshading “Ombre” technique makes it appear as though you have powder filled eyebrows, similar to the look achieved with makeup. Pigment is applied generously and across an entire area and may include a gradient, transitioning from one color to another.
Microblading is a precision technique, manually embedding pigmentation in narrowly defined hair-like strokes to give definition and the appearance of true hairs. This process acheives a distinct look that contrasts well when combined with microshading.
Question: What are the benefits of Microshading?
Answer: Some benefits of this Permanent Make Up technique is that it last longer than Microblading. Microshading lasts two years on average, depending on different factors such as skin type and lifestyle. Microshading is better suited for those with oily and sensitive skin or thicker eyebrows that only require a bit of shaping.
Question: How do you prepare pigments for Microshading?
Answer: The same way I prepare for microblading! I mix the Minx Mogul pigments to match the clients brows to get the desired colour that the client is looking for.
Question: What tools do you use for Microshading and how do you use them?
Answer: I use my Black Pearl 2.0 digital PMU machine. I use various needles to create the look the client wants. I mostly use the 3RS needle and the 5SF. These have given me perfect results!
Question: Do you ever perform Microshading alone, or is it always paired with Microblading in the form
of a combo brow?
Answer: I currently always combine microblading and microshading but I will be doing more ombré brows soon as I love that look and it’s gaining more popularity!
Question: Who is a good candidate for Microshading and combo brows?
Answer: Microshading is less restrictive as it’s suited for almost everyone! Microblading and shading is best suited for clients with oily skin and/ or with thin or very minimal hair as it creates density and gives the illusion of a fuller brow. It’s also good for people who have full brows and just want to create a defined powder filled look resembling their daily makeup.
Question: How long does Microshading last compared to Microblading?
Answer: Microshading will last slightly longer than just microblading as there is more pigment applied all over the brows. Microshading will last longer on oily skinned clients!
